There is strong evidence that proper nutrition and
supplementation during pregnancy increases positive
outcomes. The diet should include low fat protein,
favorable carbohydrates in the form of fruits and
vegetables and good fats.
The food intake should be divided in 3 meals and 2
snacks daily. A simple way to look at each meal is to
divide your plate into thirds. 1/3 should include 3 to
4 ounces of low fat protein (about the size and
thickness of your palm), the remaining 2/3 of the plate
should be filled with favorable carbohydrates and a
dash of good fat. The snacks should also include the
same ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats.
Remember supplementation with prenatal vitamins is very
important and make sure that you do not drink alcohol
or smoke.
