At Baby News Bits we love to help moms—and that includes the head honcho of all moms, Mother Earth. We believe in teaching children earth friendly practices and helping the planet whenever we can. In honor of Earth Day, here are some friends of mommy earth.
Earth Friendly Moms
Eco-Mom Alliance
Playing on strength in numbers, Eco-Mom Alliance gets moms moving to help the earth. Eco-Mom works to gather moms to join in on a two-part mission, first to help reduce global warming and then to Take the First Steps for a Sustainable Future. “The First Steps” is a commitment for moms to sustain their homes, the planet and themselves. Visit www.ecomomalliance.org and sign up to receive updates on issues pertaining from everything from global warming to eco-friendly products. A feel-good-about-yourself site that will also make the planet feel good too.
Earth Friendly Babes The g Diaper
Humans, and it can probably be said Mother Earth, have been waiting for flushable diapers for a long-time. After all, the average diaper takes 500 years to decompose in a land-fill. And because babies running around without diapers didn’t catch on (we can’t imagine why…) the g Diaper has come to the rescue with its clever design. A washable-cotton, and may we say darned cute, outer pant protects a plastic-free flushable refill inside. It is made of a breathable material that helps to prevent diaper rash, making baby happy too. If diaper change takes place in a toilet free area, you can throw away refills because they are plastic-free, and here’s the best part, only take 50-150 days to compost! Started by a family based in Tallahassee and with the singular idea that being outdoors and one with nature makes for a happy family, Blue Planet Gear has become the source for outdoor gear for moms, dads and tots. Not only do they sell gear made for families to enjoy all that Mother Earth has to offer, but they are also members of 1% for the Planet, an organization dedicated to support non-profit organizations that are involved in minimizing the impact humans have on the Earth. Toys R Us debuts Eco-Friendly Toys
April 2008--Coming to a Toys R Us and Babies R Us near you, Eco-Friendly toys and products marketed under the Toys R Us label. These toys strive to help with the changes many families are making today towards an organic and natural lifestyle. “Good Green Fun” toys will be packaged from no less than 70% recycled material. Wooden toys will be decorated using a unique wood burning technique and the Natural Cotton plush animals and dolls are colored using natural or water based dyes and made with unprocessed, unbleached or untreated cotton. Look for the trademark backwards “R”, this time in green and with leafing detail.

Recycle your cell phones
These days, people change their cell phones as frequently as their underwear. If they are tossed in the regular trash, harmful chemicals can pollute groundwater and cause air pollution. Don’t just toss your unwanted cell phones, recycling these communication tools is easy. HopeLine Bins are available at Verizon stores. These bins collect cell phones and their accessories in order to recycle and refurbish them. The profit from selling these phones goes towards buying new phones for domestic violence victims. Also, you can pick up a free, postage paid envelope at any Sprint store to send your any-make any-model used cell phone to be recycled. Proceeds from this program go to help keep kids safer online through a partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
