[cooking
with the kids]
Picky
eaters can be found in all age groups. Learning to
appreciate foods in a non-threatening manner is key to
broadening their palette. Entice your little ones with
food by engaging them in meal preparations. This is a
fun family activity that encourages the exploration of
varieties of foods through the senses, all while
exercising choice.
1. Planning is part of the fun! Organize prior to
cooking, make a list of ingredients, pre-measure, and
find your cooking tools ahead of time. Give kids safe
utensils.
2. Create a safe zone where kids can cook.
3. Set up a work area just for your child. Find a
sturdy step stool or chair to allow easy reach for
preschoolers. Remove any sharp objects from their
reach.
4. Always supervise closely, never leave children
unattended.
5. Reading and following directions is part of the
learning experience. Lessons are learned about taking
turns and sequencing from following directions.
6. Practice math as you measure.
7. Collaborate, siblings can take turns – no matter how
young tasks can be assigned to little ones from pouring
pre-measured sugar to stirring and mixing.
8. Clean-up part is part of the routine. Reserve
picking up to when the meal is in the oven.
